ICAT is collaborating with LEDS LAC and a network of other partners for the delivery of this year’s LEDS LAC regional workshop. The workshop is open to representatives and climate experts from countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, and is focused on Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) updates and alignment with long-term strategies (LTS).

In its 2024 edition, the LEDS LAC Regional Workshop will be held in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, from 30 September to 2 October and aims to provide a space for discussion and coordination for accelerating climate action and increasing ambition in Latin America and the Caribbean in the process of strengthening and implementing NDCs.

This event will bring together more than 100 participants from Latin America and the Caribbean, including representatives from national and subnational governments, the private sector, academia, civil society, international organizations, cooperation agencies, and members of the LEDS LAC communities of practice and working groups. Participants will be able to share experiences, engage in peer-to-peer learning and identify opportunities for regional collaboration and synergies on the road to COP30 through interactive sessions, panel discussions and hands-on workshops. 

Under the banner “Coordinating and Empowering Regional Action towards COP30”, this year’s workshop will focus on capacity building and collaboration focused on the process of updating NDCs, increasing ambition and linking with LTS, in light of the UAE Consensus and the Global Stocktake. The agenda of the first day of the workshop will focus on building capacity for the NDC update and LTS alignment towards COP30; the second day on mobilizing resources for climate action; and the third day will focus on multi-stakeholder governance and coordination to implement climate commitments and actions. 

The LEDS LAC regional workshop is organized in close collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank; the United Nations Development Programme; the EUROCLIMA programme through its implementing agencies, the German Cooperation Agency GIZ, the International and Ibero-American Foundation for Public Administration and Policy, and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean; the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency; and in partnership with the Global Call to Action Against Poverty, the NDC Partnership and the UN Climate Change Regional Collaboration Centre (RCC Latin America). It is also supported by the Global Methane Hub, the NAP Global Network and the High-Level Champions (Race to Zero).

The LEDS LAC regional workshops, held annually, are a forum for members and partners to network, create connections and foster collaborations and synergies. These meetings facilitate joint reflection and the exchange of learning among peers, strengthening technical dialogue and identifying needs, priorities and emerging issues that are crucial to move towards resilient and low-carbon development.

In compliance with the Paris Agreement, countries have focused their efforts on the implementation of their NDCs and the design of long-term climate strategies. 2024 is a crucial year for NDC updates, which must be submitted before March 2025 and include more ambitious commitments. This process has revealed challenges, such as the improvement of monitoring and reporting systems, the creation of innovative financing mechanisms, and the need to strengthen capacities and involve new actors to increase ambition in climate mitigation and adaptation.

Taller Regional LEDS LAC 2024: Coordinando y potenciando la acción regional hacia la COP30

En su edición 2024, el Taller Regional LEDS LAC se realizará en Foz de Iguazú, Brasil, del 30 de septiembre al 2 de octubre y tiene como objetivo dar un espacio de encuentro y articulación para acelerar la acción climática y aumentar la ambición en América Latina y el Caribe en el proceso de fortalecimiento e implementación de las NDC.

Este evento congregará a más de 100 participantes de Latinoamérica y el Caribe, incluyendo representantes de gobiernos nacionales y subnacionales, sector privado, academia, sociedad civil, organizaciones internacionales, agencias de cooperación, y miembros de nuestras Comunidades de Práctica y Grupos de Trabajo. Los participantes podrán intercambiar experiencias, generar aprendizajes entre pares e identificar oportunidades concretas para la colaboración regional y sinergias en la ruta hacia la COP30 a través de sesiones interactivas, paneles de discusión y talleres prácticos. 

Bajo el lema «Coordinando y Potenciando la Acción Regional hacia la COP30», este año el taller  se centrará en el fortalecimiento de capacidades y la colaboración enfocadas en el proceso de actualización de las NDC, el incremento de la ambición y el enlace con las Estrategias a Largo Plazo (LTS), a la luz del Consenso de EAU y Balance Global (GST). La agenda del primer día del Taller se enfocará en las Capacidades para el desarrollo de la actualización y alineamiento de NDC y LTS rumbo a la COP30, el segundo día en la Movilizando recursos para la acción, y en el tercer día se pondrá el foco en la Gobernanza y Articulación multiactor para implementar los compromisos y acciones. 

El Taller Regional LEDS LAC es organizado en estrecha colaboración con el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo (BID); el Programa de las Naciones Unidas para el Desarrollo (PNUD); el programa EUROCLIMA a través de sus agencias implementadoras, la Agencia de Cooperación Alemana GIZ, la Fundación Internacional y para Iberoamérica de Administración y Políticas Públicas (FIIAPP), y la Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe (CEPAL); Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT); y en alianza con Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP), NDC Partnership y el Centro de Colaboración Regional de ONU en Cambio Climático (RCC Latam). Cuenta también con el apoyo de Global Methane Hub, NAP Global Network y High-Level Champions (Race to Zero).

Los talleres regionales LEDS LAC, realizados anualmente, son un espacio de encuentro para miembros y socios que facilitan el networking, la creación de conexiones y el fomento de colaboraciones y sinergias. Estos encuentros facilitan la reflexión conjunta y el intercambio de aprendizajes entre pares, profundizando el diálogo técnico e identificando necesidades, prioridades y temas emergentes que son cruciales para avanzar hacia un desarrollo resiliente y bajo en emisiones.

En cumplimiento del Acuerdo de París, los países han centrado sus esfuerzos en la implementación de sus NDC y en el diseño de estrategias climáticas a largo plazo. El 2024 se presenta como un año crucial para la actualización de las NDC, que deben ser presentadas antes de marzo de 2025, con compromisos más ambiciosos. Estos procesos han puesto de relieve desafíos como la mejora de sistemas de monitoreo y reporte, la creación de mecanismos innovadores de financiamiento, y la necesidad de fortalecer capacidades e involucrar a nuevos actores para incrementar la ambición en mitigación y adaptación climática.
