Powering the energy transition through policy assessment

Renewable energy is central to the global energy transition, but countries need credible evidence to ensure their policies deliver measurable results. In this opinion piece published on the UNOPS website, Dr. Henning Wuester, Director of the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT), explains how policy assessment helps governments evaluate climate impacts, identify implementation barriers and strengthen policy design.

He highlights the ICAT Renewable Energy Methodology, updated in 2026 to improve user experience and expand its policy coverage, and explores how robust assessments can build investor confidence, inform policy decisions and maximize the wider economic, social and environmental benefits of renewable energy.
