In ICAT, we are shocked and deeply saddened by the news of John Christensen’s passing. John was a special friend of ICAT, instrumental in its creation. This is only one of many of his important contributions to the international climate and sustainable development agenda. We will miss his warmth and compassion. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues.
The announcement below was published by the UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre on 9 June 2026.
It is with a very heavy heart that we share the news that our former director, John Christensen, passed away peacefully yesterday.
John was truly one of a kind — the founding father of UNEP-CCC, a mentor to many of us, a globally recognized leader in the climate change community, and, most importantly, a wonderful human being.
Over a career spanning more than four decades, he dedicated his life to advancing climate action and sustainable development, helping shape international cooperation and contributing to some of the world’s most influential climate efforts. Through his work with the IPCC, he was part of the wider scientific community awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
John was one of the kindest and most generous people many of us have ever known. His warmth, wisdom, and unwavering commitment touched countless lives, and we feel deeply grateful to have known and worked alongside him.
It is difficult to fathom that John is no longer with us. Right now, it feels almost impossible to imagine moving forward without him. His legacy will continue to inspire all of us in years to come.
We send our deepest condolences and heartfelt thoughts to his family, his wife, his three children, and grandchildren.
Our thoughts are with them during this incredibly difficult time.
