Saturday 9 December | 18:30—20:00 GST | Side-Event Room 2 & livestreaming
Co-hosted with: Nigeria, Sustainable Energy Africa
The concept of just transition introduces a crucial approach to addressing climate change while ensuring social equity and fairness. It prioritizes minimizing the adverse effects of the transition to a low-carbon economy, particularly on vulnerable groups, through equitable policies and practices. A just transition relies heavily on transparency to build trust. Stakeholders need to know that there is a transition plan and key indicators are monitored to ensure that it is just. As such, transparency in managing just transitions is an essential prerequisite for transformative and inclusive climate action, and ensuring that no one will be left behind.
The event will explore how Nigeria, South Africa and other countries approach the tracking of just transition processes linked to NDC implementation. Experts from Nigeria, South Africa, and Scotland will discuss their countries’ just transition strategies, covering challenges, lessons learned, and future expectations. Representatives from the World Resources Institute and ICAT will provide additional insights, including a preview of ICAT’s upcoming guide on the monitoring and evaluation of just transitions.
